Setting up a testing center

Setting up a testing center

Testing center staff with owner or editor permissions will need to set up the following:

  • Accomodations
  • Locations
    • Seat groups
    • Seats
    • Networks
  • Exams
  • Sessions

Create accommodations

  • From the homepage, navigate to the testing center by either: (1) selecting the testing center from Testing centers where you are staff, or (2) selecting an institution from Institution administration, going to the Centers page on the top menu bar, and choosing the testing center.
  • Go to the Settings tab from the top menu bar.
  • Go to the Accommodations tab.
  • Click Add accommodations. For example, you can create accommodations for reduced distraction, wheelchair, bathroom break, text-to-speech and others.
  • Name the accommodation (Reduced distraction), create an abbreviation (RD), and provide a short description of the purpose of the accommodation.
  • Confirm by clicking Add accommodations.

Custom ID reader

In general, the link to the student identification reader application is configured at the institution level by the institution administrator. However, testing centers can override the institution setting, by providing their own link, following the steps below:

  • From the homepage, navigate to the testing center by either: (1) selecting the testing center from Testing centers where you are staff, or (2) selecting an institution from Institution administration, going to the Centers page on the top menu bar, and choosing the testing center.
  • Go to the Settings tab from the top menu bar.
  • From the General tab, edit the Custom Student ID App option, by checking the box "Use custom students ID app", and click Save.
  • Click the Edit button next to Read-ID App URL to enter the testing center link to the student card reading application.

Create locations

  • From the homepage, navigate to the testing center by either: (1) selecting the testing center from Testing centers where you are staff, or (2) selecting an institution from Institution administration, going to the Centers page on the top menu bar, and choosing the testing center.
  • Go to the Locations tab from the top menu bar.
  • Click Add location.
  • Select the location type. Select:
    • In-person if you are creating a physical location for the testing center
    • Online if you are creating a virtual location for the testing center which requires proctoring, for example video conferencing app
    • Unproctored if you are creating a virtual location for the testing center which does not require proctoring
  • Confirm by clicking Add location.

Create seat groups

For each location, go to the Seat groups tab.

  • Click Add seat group.
  • Create a name for your seat group. For example, "Quiet".
  • Select the type of accommodations supported by this group. For example, bathroom break, reduced distraction and text-to-speech.

These seat groups will define the seats at each location in which students can receive the needed accommodations. You should also create a "Standard" seat group that will contain most seats and which probably won't have any associated accommodations.

Seat groups need to be defined separately for each location with a testing center.

Create seats

For each location, go to the Seats tab.

  • Click Add seats.
  • Provide the list of seat numbers for each seat group, and confirm by clicking Add seats.

Sometimes some of the seats may become unavailable, for example, a keyboard may need replacement or a computer is broken. In these situations, you should edit the seat active status by un-selecting the "Active" box. This is important, since students are automatically assigned to a seat with active status.

Setup networks

For each location, go to the Networks tab. To activate the network filtering, click the Edit button, select Network filtering active, and click Save.

  • Click Add network.
  • Enter the the network address block, and click Add network to confirm.
